Online Stroop Test for Color Cognition

A short color-word task designed to observe how quickly attention resolves a conflict between what a word says and the color in which it is shown.

Background

What the Stroop test measures

The Stroop effect is one of the best-known demonstrations in experimental psychology. When the meaning of a color word conflicts with its displayed color, people usually take longer to respond. The delay is useful because it makes an otherwise invisible process visible: the mind has to inhibit the automatic habit of reading and give priority to a visual feature instead.

This online Stroop test uses that conflict as a compact benchmark for selective attention, processing speed, and the way a participant holds a color concept in mind while scanning a changing visual field.

Color-word interference

Reading is highly automatic for fluent readers. A mismatched color word creates interference because the written word and the displayed color compete for attention.

Visual thinking

The task asks the participant to maintain a chosen color as a word, then locate that same word when it appears in a specified display color.

Executive control

Stroop-style tasks are often discussed in relation to attention control, response inhibition, and conflict monitoring in frontal brain networks.

Method

How this online Stroop study works

  1. Choose a color and keep it in mind as a word.
  2. Each round names a display color to search for.
  3. Find your chosen word shown in that color.
  4. As soon as you find it, tap NEXT, do not tap the color.
  5. This is a timed test.

Research context

John Ridley Stroop published his classic color-word interference paper in 1935. Since then, the Stroop task has become a standard tool for studying attention, cognitive interference, and the coordination of reading with visual perception.
